A Father's Influence

A Father's Influence

By Pastor Dennis Morales

“And he arose and came to his father. But when he was still a great way off, his father saw him and had compassion..."  (Luke 15:20)

In the story of the prodigal son, we can't help but to gravitate to the father's reaction to his son coming home. His son had rebelled, left home, and wasted his inheritance. The son asking for his share of the inheritance was the equivalent, in Jewish custom, of saying "you are as good as dead" to his father. The son lost everything, he was lonely, and empty, when he "came to himself" (Luke 5:17). He had a moment of clarity and remembered his father's kindness. The prodrigal son is sorrowful and decides to go back home to seek his father's forgiveness. As the son is approaching his father's house, his father sees him, runs to him, and forgives him before he can say anything. The bible says it's "God's goodness that leads us to repentance" (Romans 2:4). The father's behavior had an influence on his son's life and was instrumental in his return. The father's reaction is similar to God's attitude toward anyone who gives their life to Him or comes back to Him. The bible says God is "rich in mercy and great in love" (Ephesians 2:4). One cannot underestimate a father's role in the life of a child. As a father, I understand my actions and my words can have great influence on my two boys and their future decisions. I may not be able to control what direction they will take in life, but I can control my behavior and be a godly influence in their lives. I can teach them to pray, respect others, and most importantly, how to follow Jesus.
